"HAVE LESSONS, WILL TRAVEL"
Programs in Your School

We realize that it may not be feasible to come to Leeland Valley, so we offer a program, "Have Lessons,Will Travel," that will bring science, social studies, or health programs to the indoor or outdoor classrooms of your school.  Many of these programs contribute to achieving KERA Learning Goals and Academic Expectations.

The cost is $30.00 per hour per instructor.  If distant driving is involved, travel expenses will be added.

Let us know which of the following programs will enhance your instructional goals.

Science Programs

These programs are great for Science Fairs or Earth Day and can be presented to one or to several groups in a day.

"Reverence Circle"
This popular program is taken from "The Indian Soft Walk" and has been modified for Have Lessons, Will Travel.  Using their senses, the students will sit in complete silence in a circle (preferably outdoors) and discover the "awe!" of nature from a surprise basket full of nature items that will be passed around.

Grade:1st and up
Time: approximately 30 minutes
Number of students: 20- 30 students

"A Tree Exploration"
A unique student-interactive program on the importance of trees that will stimulate lots of enthusiasm for our trees.  A great program for Arbor Day.

Grades: 4th and up
Time: approximately 1 hour
Number of students: 20 - 40 students

Project WILD, Project WILD Aquatic, Project Wet, Project Learning Tree
The Leeland Valley staff features a trained facilitator for these programs. Activities from these programs are available and can be selected or adapted at the teachers request.

Health and Physical Education

Yoga
This class is very useful for students and teachers because it teaches not only about the importance of daily stretching and good posture but also the importance of being still and quiet creating a calming effect on the individual and the classroom.  This program has been presented from hyperactive 2nd graders to high school psychology classes.  School staff classes can also be arranged.

Grades: K and-up
Time: 30 minutes -2 hrs
Number of students: This depends on the amount of available space

Team Building
Leeland provides a Team Building program for classes that can be taken to your school.  Team Building has proven to be a great way to work on unity in the classroom, especially where there are cliques and a lot of diversity.  Your students will have great fun learning about themselves, building relationships, and learning that each team member is important when working together to reach a goal.  The team building program stresses cooperation over competition as the class goes through a series of games.

Grades: 2nd and up
Time: 3 hrs or more
Number of students: one class

Social Studies

Native Americans

"The Reverence Circle"
This program (described above under Science) can be used to teach your students the respect the Native Americans had for the earth and all its creatures and plants.

Edible and Medicinal Plants
Native Americans and early pioneers depended on their knowledge about plants for their health and for food.  In this program the students will learn to identify local plants and their usages by using their senses.

Grades:2nd and up
Time: 30 minutes to 1 hour
Number of students: 20-30 students

A Mayan Indian Speaks
Martin Castro, a young Mayan Indian man from Guatemala, a neighboring country, has shared with many students about his culture and the hardships that he has survived from civil wars.  His life story is a modern version of the atrocities that many Native Americans have had to endure.

Africa

African Dance and Music
The music and dance of Africa is a major part of the culture of this exciting continent.  In this program, the students will have the opportunity to learn some African drum beats and rhythms and some African dance steps.

"A Day in African Village"
This program will give students an opportunity to learn about Africa with dance and music workshops, an African guest speaker, and a market day.  We have taken this program to a small school in eastern Kentucky.
