"HAVE LESSONS, WILL TRAVEL"
Programs in Your School

We realize that it may not be feasible to come to Leeland Valley, so we offer a program, "Have Lessons,Will Travel," that will bring science, social studies, or health programs to the indoor or outdoor classrooms of your school.  Many of these programs contribute to achieving KERA Learning Goals and Academic Expectations.

The cost is $60.00 per hour per instructor.  If distant driving is involved, travel expenses will be added.

Let us know which of the following programs will enhance your instructional goals.

Science Programs

These programs are great for Science Fairs or Earth Day and can be presented to one or to several groups in a day.

"Reverence Circle"
This popular program is taken from "The Indian Soft Walk" and has been modified for our in-school programs.  Using their senses, the students will sit in complete silence in a circle (preferably outdoors) and discover the "awe!" of nature from a surprise basket full of nature items that will be passed around.

Health and Physical Education

Yoga
Yoga is for all ages and all abilities. Yoga not only teaches about the importance of daily stretching and good posture but also the importance of being still and quiet, creating a calming effect on the individual and the classroom.

Yoga Meets Nature Ages 4 –12
Using imagination, children become plants, all kinds of animals, and more through lively music, yoga postures, free-style dance, and ending with calmness. A great Earth Day class.

Yoga Meets DanceTM (YMD) All Ages
YMD combines yoga and free and guided dance to lively music and ends with calmness. A great class for bonding students.

Julia Rome certified yoga instructor, 200 RYT
Julia has been teaching yoga for over 30 years to all ages and has seen its benefits with hyperactive children, special needs children, and high school students. She has taught yoga to Head Start staff and special education teachers.

Team Building
Leeland provides a Team Building program for classes that can be taken to your school.  Team Building has proven to be a great way to work on unity in the classroom, especially where there are cliques and a lot of diversity.  Your students will have great fun learning about themselves, building relationships, and learning that each team member is important when working together to reach a goal.  The team building program stresses cooperation over competition as the group goes through a series of games that will get their bodies moving.

Grades: 2nd and up
Time: 3 hrs or more
Number of students:
10 or more

Social Studies

Native Americans

"The Reverence Circle"
This program (described above under Science) can be used to teach your students the respect the Native Americans had for the earth and all its creatures and plants.

Edible and Medicinal Plants
Native Americans and early pioneers depended on their knowledge about plants for their health and for food.  In this program the students will learn to identify local plants and their usages by using their senses.

Grades:4th and up
Time: 30 minutes to 1 hour
Number of students: 20-30 students

A Mayan Indian Speaks
Martin Castro, a young Mayan Indian man from Guatemala, a neighboring country, has shared with many students about his culture and the hardships that he has survived from civil wars.  His life story is a modern version of the atrocities that many Native Americans have had to endure.

Africa

African Dance and Music
The music and dance of Africa is a major part of the culture of this exciting continent.  In this program, the students will have the opportunity to learn some African drum beats and rhythms and some African dance steps.

"A Trip to Africa"
The program "A Trip to Africa" is a time to feel the " spirit of Africa" as students of all ages, use their imagination to travel with Lillian Carvalho and Julia Rome to Lillian's home in Uganda.

The students will travel by plane and bus to the village, Toro.  Along the journey we will stop at a market and the students will dress in African garb. As they arrive in Toro the village drums will welcome them.  In Toro they will learn about life in Ms. Lillian’s home village highlighting the virtues, respect, sharing, and caring.  They will also learn about resourcefulness as they learn about the many uses of the banana plant (you will be amazed about the banana plant).  We will conclude the program with African dancing, and drumming and if time permits with an African story or song.

By the end of the program we will feel as though we have all been together to Africa, so be ready for an awesome experience!

It takes a village to have fun, so come join us!

We have taken this program to a small school in eastern Kentucky.
