"Living the Native Way" |

| Students will have fun being
Native Americans, living fully in the natural world with
a reverence for life, through participation in your
choice of the following activities: 1.
Indian Soft Walk - Students will silently walk along the
creek and sit in a circle, using their five senses to
discover the wonders of nature around them and through
the items in the leader's surprise basket. 2. Still Hunt - Students will spend 30 minutes in silence in their own private sitting place in the forest or hillside, observing and learning as they let their minds settle into a still and watchful mood as was practiced by the American Indians. Writing prompts will be provided for classroom follow-up. (Grades 4 and up) 3. Animal
Tracks and Signs - Students will learn about hunting for
food as they walk through the forest discovering animal
tracks and signs. 4. Medicinal and Edible Plants -Students will walk through the forest discovering, smelling, and sometimes tasting medicinal and edible plants as the leader explains their uses. (Grades 4 and up) 5. Cooking
on the Fire - Students will discover how Native
Americans cooked their foods as they learn about fire
building and cooking on the open fire. 6.
Living in A Tipi - Students will "play house" as a
Native American, learning about foods, child
rearing, games, and storytelling. 7. Native American Crafts - Students will make a dream catcher, head band, corn shuck doll, or other craft. (Grades K and up) |

A Mayan Indian Life - A full-blooded Mayan Indian will share
about his culture and his childhood in Guatemala during
the 1980's . 9.
Bow Making - Bow making is an art that requires a lot
of hard work and time. Students will meet a bow maker who
will demonstrate the skills involved and offer smaller
groups an opportunity to shoot a bow. |
